The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei is partnering with Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) to organize a Canadian Innovative Medical Health Solutions Seminar with support from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ontario (MEDT), the Alberta Trade Office in Taipei, the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB), and the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Program Office (BPIPO).

About the speaker – Mr. Kevin Brooks, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing

Mr. Kevin Brooks is the Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing of MDS Nordion. Mr. Brooks joined MDS Nordion in July 2006. He holds more than 20 years of global strategic and operational marketing experience and knowledge in strategic product development and positioning. He joined MDS Nordion in 2006 from GE Healthcare where he was Global Marketing Director, Cardiology Portfolio. Mr. Brooks has extensive experience in the molecular imaging and radiotherapeutics industry, as well as a solid track record of building global Brand teams and delivering strong results.

Mr. Brooks holds a Master’s of Business Administration from Temple University , Philadelphia Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Healthcare Management  From Gwynedd Mercy College, Gwynedd Pennsylvania, as well as several professional licensures in Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound.

2. Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp (ACS)  www.acs-corp.com

Alcohol Countermeasure Systems Corp (ACS) is a Canadian global leader in alcohole testing solutions with more than 35 years experience. Mr. Adam Comeau in his role as Vice President of Business Development is charged with discovering new international business opportunities. Having an International MBA, Mr. Comeau’s global business experience is an asset to ACS, as it steadfastly increases its market share around the world. Mr. Comeau seeks to meet with potential sales partners, government officials and community leaders interested in reducing drunk-driving-related fatalities in their prospective countries. 3. Toronto Region Research Alliance

About the speaker – Mr Sampson Lee, Director Bio Life Sciences

Dr. Sampson Lee joined TRRA as Director, Life Sciences and Health Care in December 2007. From 2001 to 2007, Dr. Lee held various positions at NPS Pharmaceuticals, including Senior Director of Research Operations, responsible for management of the company’s $20 million annual drug discovery operations. Dr. Lee was also Emerging Technologies Group Leader, responsible for scouting, evaluating and acquiring new technologies and early stage drug discovery programs from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as well as from academic institutions.  Prior to NPS Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Lee was with DuPont Canada, from 1995 to 2000, starting as a Research Scientist before joining one of DuPont’s acquisitions teams as a Business Development Specialist. Dr. Lee earned his Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Toronto. During that time, he was also a co-founder (1993-1995) of the Toronto Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology, a private vocational school training students in cGMP manufacturing, quality control, quality assurance, and pharmaceutics research.

4. Government of Alberta

Alberta’s areas of strength within the life sciences industry include Medical Biotechnology, Mecial Devices, and Agricultural & Forestry Bioproducts. Alberta has strong research capablities on nanotechnology and advanced materials, the National Institute of Nanotechnology is housed in University of Alberta, both the UofA and University of Calgary equip with many world scale labs and research centers in the nanotools, nanosystems and nanofablication.

Some best practices from Alberta:

  • The robot simulator is helping bioengineers at the University of Calgary determine why injured joints often develop arthritis, and how to improve the healing process.
  • Developed by Alberta biotech company Ceapro Inc., the wafers provide an accurate, sensitive and consistent way to help identify the onset of adult diabetes.
  • The University of Calgary is designated as a Sun Centre of Excellence for Visual Genomics, and the 4D cave is a powerful life science research tool, the first of its kind.
  • A surgical team at the Foothills Medical Centre  designed   the world’s first MRI-compatible surgical robot ,   enhances accuracy and safety of brain surgery. “NeuroArm” ,  will revolutionize neurosurgery and other branched of operative medicine.

About the speaker – Ms Constance Leung, Trade and Investment Officer, N. Asia

Ms Constance Leung joined the Government of Alberta at 2008 as Trade and Investment Officer, responsible for the North Asia markets. Prior to this, Constance worked for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. With over 10 years of experience working for NGO and government, she focuses at marketing and promoting international trade. Constance holds a Master degree in Communications Studies from the University of Leeds.
